Rock The Ocean has a new honorary family member! Named after @shaboozey from the 2025 Tortuga Music Festival Lineup, meet... SHYBOOZEY! 🐢 🫣

On December 9th, a cold-stunned sea turtle was brought to @seaturtlerecovery, lethargic and unable to eat. Luckily, with the help of Sea Turtle Recovery, this little one is now getting plenty to eat and taking plenty of naps! Rock The Ocean was quick to sponsor this little one. This turtle is reportedly the SHYEST sea turtle that Sea Turtle Recovery has EVER encountered. Rock The Ocean teamed up with @TortugaMusicFestival to host a giveaway that included 2 General Admission Passes to Tortuga Music Festival and the opportunity to name our newest sponsored sea turtle, as long as the name went along with the Tortuga 2025 lineup. Our winner understood the assignment.

Did you know that Rock The Ocean created a shirt dedicated to the South Resident Killer Whales?

This performance shirt features hand-drawn depictions of the dorsal fins & saddle patches (which are unique to each whale, similar to a human's fingerprint) of some of these very special killer whales. In fact, L25 Ocean Sun, featured at the top of the sleeve, is the matriarch of the pod and documented to be around 100 years old. She is thought to be the mother of the famous Lolita (Tokitae) that was captured in these waters & transported to Miami Seaquarium where she sadly passed away in August of 2023. This shirt hopes to call attention to the plight of these beautiful whales in the hopes that more people will share their story & advocate for their survival. 100% of the proceeds from this shirt will be donated to organizations working to save the critically endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales.

In honor of #MarineMammalRescueDay, let's learn more about our Conservation Village Partners, Orca Behavior Institute, and the work they are doing to save the Southern Resident Killer Whales. 🌊

At the end of 2024, the Orca Behavior Institute and their colleagues at the Center for Whale Research started a new field study to gain insights into killer whale communication. They spent two weeks in Puget Sound near Seattle, Washington on the water with the endangered Southern Resident killer whales. Aboard a permitted research vessel, they simultaneously collected aerial observations of orca behavior via drone while recording their acoustic vocalizations using a hydrophone array.

Much of a whale’s behavior occurs underwater, so it’s hard to observe, but when they’re near the surface, you can see more of what they’re doing from above. By linking the drone footage with calls localized from the underwater recordings, the Orca Behavior Institute hopes to discover new links between specific vocalizations and specific behaviors. For example, if they discover that key behaviors like sharing a fish or nursing a calf occur alongside specific vocalizations, it would improve what they can learn about whale behavior by listening in via a hydrophone in more remote places like the outer coast.

This was their first stint in the field for this project and they lucked out by encountering all three Southern Resident killer whale pods while we were there: J-Pod, K-Pod, and L-Pod. They had 10 whale encounters over the course of two weeks, and this video shows what a day on the water looked like. Orca Behavior Institute spent this winter analyzing both the video and acoustic data from this effort. They will be back in Puget Sound in the fall of 2025 to continue this project, and can’t wait to see what they learn!
